T30 2001 X-Trail

NISSAN X-TRAIL DIESEL STATION WAGON 2001-2007

I bought this Nissan T30 X-Trail last April, as I prepared to make a move across to Bulgaria where the roads are notoriously poor! It had done 85,000 miles! It did have some recent service history so I took it for a test drive and was instantly impressed by the seating position and its ride comfort! As one of the smallest 4x4's it is pretty much in a class of its own! Since I've owned it I've replaces a front steering control arm and a CV joint due to a shattered wheel bearing! With regards to the economy, I managed to get 322 miles from 3/8 of a tank the other week on a trip down south and back! This was at a steady cruising speed of 65-70 mph. The back is large enough for a double mattress with the seats laid down, so plenty of room! Overall despite its gremlins, I really do like this vehicle! It also has a class 1 sound system.

Great workhorse

NISSAN X-TRAIL DIESEL STATION WAGON 2001-2007

Style - wise it's a bit sit up and beg but as an all round workhorse it's great. Tows a 1500kg caravan without missing a beat, driving wise you sometimes forget that it's hitched up. No suspension drop when loaded or hitched up for towing and being the Aventura model, it has all the whistles and bells on it. Fairly economical on the diesel and uber comfortable on a long trip. The only downer is that the satnav is only upgradeable to 2012 but can't have everything I suppose. (No timing belt either, good old series of chains instead.) Fairly straight forward to work on and parts are relatively cheap and plentiful.

Wish I'd had an X-Trail years ago !

NISSAN X-TRAIL DIESEL STATION WAGON 2001-2007

Got my X-Trail 1 and a half years ago with 95.5k miles on the clock. The engine management light was on so the garage sorted it (new Fuel Suction Control Valve) which would have been approx. £100. I do a lot of commuting on A roads / motorway (about 50 miles a day round-trip) so went for a diesel - returns around 36 - 37 MPG. I also regularly tow a caravan (not on my commute) which the X-Trail pulls really well. MPG is down when towing (haven't worked out how much by) but still seems better MPG than my wife's Ford Galaxy (2.3 petrol) when towing but much more capable. I'd say that the only thing lacking is a low-ratio gearbox setting for towing in some muddy fields which would probably save a lot of clutch usage. Hope I'm not tempting fate but the only thing I have had to replace since owning it (apart from fuel, wipers, bulbs, tyres, etc.) is a front brake caliper 3 months after I bought the car. It's regularly serviced (not by a main dealer). I've done 23,000 miles in it to date (cruise control is great) and love it - the hardest thing to get used to is the instrument panel being in the centre of the dashboard (not straight in front of the driver). The in-built sat-nav is good (shame it doesn't do post-codes, just street names and the map is a bit out of date) but is great for traffic info. I've had many cars but this is the first car I've had that my wife actually likes driving 🙂

X-Trail Diesel

NISSAN X-TRAIL DIESEL STATION WAGON 2001-2007

Was thoroughly looking forward to owning an X-Trail after driving a slightly later version belonging to a friend. Upon purchasing one I had nothing but problems...broken earth cables, poor electrical connections, fuel pump faults, excessive smoke emissions, drivetrain faults, wheel bearings to name but a few! After rectifying the numerous faults and getting to drive it fault-free for a short period, I was impressed by the performance and economy. Road handling was quite civilised for a four wheel drive vehicle, interior is purposeful and comfortable and everything seems fine....until it breaks down again! I have therefore, decided to get it up together to sell (at least the new owner will have the faults rectified and can probably just enjoy driving it). The friends X-Trail (a 2007 model) has subsequently dropped the timing chain and destroyed the engine, rendering it not economical to repair! Not sure what the later generation version is like but hopefully they have rectified all the known faults and improved overall reliability and build quality.

NISSAN X-TRAIL DIESEL STATION WAGON 2001-2007

There is only one let down to this model I have found and that is the air con! It is comfy, roomy, reliable, very nippy and totally practical! as one of the smallest 4x4's it is also one of the most economical. With 6th gear on a run I can easily acheive 70 mpg and for a car of this size that is outstanding! The sun roof is massive and that makes up for the air con. I cannot prais this car enough as it is the first 4x4 I have owned but it is all I wanted from one as well! Off road and on it performs!

Great car, but quite thirsty. Getting maybe 31 to the gallon on a long run. Great driving experience and very comfortable with loads of room.
