LEXUS IS SALOON 1999-2005

We've had this car for over 15 years from new and it's running as well now as the day we bought it. We've decided not to replace it as we couldn't get the same level of spec for under £25k.

Slow but fun.

LEXUS IS SALOON 1999-2005

It's a lovely car to drive but it's incredibly heavy on fuel. Mine averages only 21 MPG !!! The handling is on par with a 3 Series BMW of the same age, the only problem is it hasn't got enough torque who backed up it's sporty looks, despite this it has enough top end power for easy overtaking at even quite naughty speeds. The boot is a reasonable size but the loading Hatch is quite small and the car lacks folding rear seats, so the saloon would never make a good load lugger. The trim level is excellent with electric windows all round, electricly operated and heated wing mirrors, electricly adjustable and heated front seats, air conditioning, and most models come with a glass tilt and slide sunroof........ generally, if Lexus could electricly control, heat or move something they did it. Reliability is amazing. Before buying mine I asked on several forums about what the cars weak points were. The consensus was the most likely part to fail was the Little springs that pops open the petrol filler cap (Sure enough mine failed after 3 weeks of owning the car. 🙂 ). Apart from this I've had zero real issues.

LEXUS IS SALOON 1999-2005

A very reliable and comfortable car which has run faultlessly for 12 years. In fact I have never even changed a bulb on the car. Running costs are however quite high.

All-rounder.

LEXUS IS SALOON 1999-2005

Might as well start with how it looks, and in my opinion it looks great even with the stock 17" alloys, its a car that will age well and still look great in years to come. The rear lights an already super cool look that started a trend with tuners and manufacturers alike and the slight bulg in the bonnet gives it an understatedly mean look. The ride is superb no matter how you hit the throttle, it absorbs bumps like its was designed only for that terrain. The handling is so precise especially on higher speed corners, the lower speed corners are still fantastic despite high body roll, there arent many 5 door rear wheel saloons that will match it in a corner at speed. The reliability is great as would be expected of any toyota, general wear and tear is to be expected as mileage creeps up but with proper care, regular services and good oil, i suspect these will run past 200k with minor signs of the usage. Interior is very well made with the higher spec models coming with full leather or half leather seats and steering wheel. Heated seats, full electric windows and seats. Plenty of leg space in the back and comfort in the rear is sublim, its literally like sitting on your sofa at home. The lexus premium sound system is again great, six-cd autochanger and crystal clear speakers pumping out lots and lots of bass if thats what your after. Fuel economy isnt the best but is to be expected of a 2ltr of its age, tax is reasonable again and insurance seems suprisingly cheap. Power is the only thing i can complain about. Around 150hp and 190torq which is in my opinion is serverly underpowered for a car of its weight and aimed market competitors. That being said it still pulls well if a little slow and top end isnt shabby, i will put them around 135 to 145 depending on condition and car itself as know 2 cars can ever be built identical. If your looking at tuning then it will be pricey as there are very very very few parts manufactured for the aftermarket scene but if willing to spend then great power can be gained and handling mods will enhance already great handling nicely. All in all one of the best all-around 2ltr cars out there.

Almost perfect

LEXUS IS SALOON 1999-2005

If it were not for the levels of fuel consumption and Road Tax, I would be completely delighted with my Lexus IS200SE Auto. Also, the local Franchise dealer is a gem.

Overall quality good, drives and run comfortable for driver and front passenger. Rear passenger if tall not so wonderful. Needs winding up for a performance drive, better when use of Shell V Power Nitro get a kick in second gear... wow.

This is the car I have always wanted

LEXUS IS SALOON 1999-2005

The Lexus IS 200 is the most over engineered car I know off. For the price it is extraordinary , I dont know how Toyota do it. Must be selling for a loss. I have had my Lexus for four years and apart from servicing every year, I have replaced one bulb. Engine is still sweet at 108000 miles, uses no oil between services. I cant fault this car. It has presence on the road, you dont see one every day and is a joy to own.

LEXUS IS SALOON 1999-2005

Exceptionally reliable car. Currently 175,600 miles on the car. I have owned mine for 10 years as it's so reliable I couldn't see any point in getting rid of it. Fuel consumption much better than I expected. Boot capacity quite small for a vehicle this size. Performance is not breath taking but if you want performance get something else.

Reliable long distance cruiser

LEXUS IS SALOON 1999-2005

Ultimate reliability and eats up the miles with style and comfort. Get a good one and you will not want to part with it! This is our second IS 200. A bit thirsty round town and the boot is big but no fold down rear seats. Watch out for corrosion on the rear of the sills. Go for one with a full Lexus service history and you will not go far wrong.

I have had it for 9 of it's 12 years now, and am still as happy with it. If the fuel consumption and Road Tax were lower, my satisfaction would be complete. Reliability, comfort, quality and servicing are all 100%

Best car I've owned since my first, a Morris Traveller in the late 1960s.

LEXUS IS SALOON 1999-2005

It's only available now second-hand, but it is a really pleasing and reliable car. It has now done 128,000+ miles since I bought it second-hand in June 2009 with 52,000 miles on the clock from Lexus Swindon where it has since been regularly serviced. I previously owned two IS200 saloons which were good but a tad under-powered. The 3-litre engine makes a big difference and still sounds sweet. The car is a pleasure to drive with plenty of power available when needed for safe over-taking. I drive it mostly in auto mode, but manual is available via steering wheel buttons. Although it has a 'snow' button it's rear-wheel drive and the wide tyres render it skittish in icy conditions, so I fit winter types to help reduce that. The cabin is quite small - fine for me and my wife, but only just OK as a four-seater for adults. The boot is also small, and there's only a restricted opening into the rear of the cabin to accept lengthy items such as my fishing rods. Tyre wear is reasonably good, and replacement items have generally been confined to parts, as expected, subject to wear and tear. The only exceptions have been some pot-hole damaged front suspension parts and the rear silencer box which came adrift at about 110,00 miles. The bodywork remains in surprisingly good condition considering its age with very few chips showing. The paint on the front plastic area became quite badly pitted, but my amateur re-spray (with a near matching Toyota colour aerosol) has largely revived it and is lasting well. As far as I can see the underside is also pretty rust free, but I do need to insert a rubber sheet between the jack and the jacking points to avoid damaging the paintwork - I feel the design here could have been better. Since the Morris, I have owned a Saab 96, a Saab 95 (both the old types with the free-wheel facility), driven several company supplied Vauxhalls and Fords over the years as well as many different hire cars, but this is by far my favourite.

Japanese luxury

LEXUS IS SALOON 1999-2005

Thus car was a spare of the moment purchase and by far the greatest. Awesome for the money, what other car offers full electric heated seats, Cruise control, satnav and is as cheap as they are. Only down side is the lower than normal mpg but it's a small price to pay for such a nice car. Handles really well such a big car.

Cracking second hand family car

LEXUS IS SALOON 1999-2005

Buying a car with over 90,000 miles on the clock can be a worry. Happy to say that changing from another Japanese brand to this I was very pleased with the overall condition and quality. Everything still works in the car from the satnav to the 6 disc changer. Even the tape deck still plays well. Lovely straight six burble at low rpm still makes me smile. Wheels will need to berefurbished at some point as the finish is peeling slightly from the inside edges of the spokes and there is a little rust on the inside edge of the sun roof and some in the well of the boot, on the right hand side. Overall very happy with my purchase and it drives well.

Mine

LEXUS IS SALOON 1999-2005

Wonderful car. 2 litre petrol. Drives beautifully. Even an old man like me (78) can enjoy a five hour drive. There are only two things about the car that I don't like. No cruise control. Mine is 6 speed, cruise control only came with the auto box. Stupid gear ratios. It's a close ratio box. Sixth gear is about what a normal fourth gear would be. This is NOT a race/rally car. It really needed a tall gear for motorway cruising.

There are no apparent faults in this model. Sometimes, you come across a model that is simply " Bulletproof", Lexus can claim that with the IS200. Just remember tohave a look at the service history.

LEXUS IS SALOON 1999-2005

The Lexus is a very smooth drive for a 2 ltr sport, it handles the road amazing and does not lack in power. The Interior is nicely built and is extremely comfortable. The only down side is that it is not overly economical on fuel.

305,000 miles on the clock - and still going strong

LEXUS IS SALOON 1999-2005

I purchased my fantastic blue IS200 Sport - complete with Aeropack and 18" wheels - brand new in July 2002 (exactly the same as Lexus showed in their IS200 press adverts at the time). I have owned the car ever since and I have just gone through 305,000 miles. The car has had only a very few minor faults and most components are original - including the engine, gearbox and clutch! That said I have had to replace the radiator, rear exhaust box, front struts, track rod ends, and normal consumables as you'd expect like discs and pads. This car is absolutely incredible and I still love driving it. My aim is to keep it for as long as it keeps going - next target - 400,000 miles! It's not the most fuel efficient or quick cars out there but in terms of ride, handling, build quality and reliability it is second to none. Parts for it are also now really cheap. In terms of looks I still think it looks great and I would recommend one to anyone.
