FORD FOCUS DIESEL HATCHBACK 2008-2011

Build quality poor, the body flexes when cornering at slower speeds, you can hear the doors moving against the seals, panel fit lines inconsistent. Some niggling design shortcomings which really should not be seen on a modern car. FM radio performance mediocre at best. Very high road noise in the cab with virtually no sound attenuation material used, thin carpets don't help. Good engine, good economy. useful rev ranges. Drives well and good road holding. Six speed auto box is quite lazy on take-up in first and reverse otherwise not too bad. Overall would hesitate to recommend it unless a dead cheap second car for shorter journeys.

Great as a first car, great as a family car

FORD FOCUS DIESEL HATCHBACK 2008-2011

This is my first car at 17 years old, it was also given down to me from my mother, and as she hasn't gotten a car of her own since the car also has been the family car for a five person family. As practicality goes it's great, many storage spaces, the boot is very spacious and carries a lot Of luggage, the space in the back is great in terms of leg and head room. As a drivers car you can't go wrong with this to begin with. The steering in any setting is sharp and responsive yet comfortable enough for city driving and sporty enough for country driving (depending on steering setting) the wheel always feels connected to the road in any setting. My quarrel though with the car driving wise is that it's quite slow of the line as the Diesel engine seems to take time to kick in. Other issues are that the sound proofing is almost non existent and in motorways it is very loud. Also whilst the suspension is quite sporty and feels good around fast country lanes, it's a bit too stiff to have a comfortable drive home compared to other cars, but it isn't too much of an issue. However the pros definitely out weigh the cons. And the car is far more pretty than most cars of its class. Brilliant car with a few problems.

Very happy!

FORD FOCUS DIESEL HATCHBACK 2008-2011

Really happy with how the car drives, its smooth and generally responsive. It's comfortable but struggles slightly over speed bumps if you're going fast. Running costs are very low and have had no problems with my DPF yet! My car is on 70,000 miles. I have a 15 mile commute which is probably what it needs to keep the dpf clear.

Great car despite some electrical niggles

FORD FOCUS DIESEL HATCHBACK 2008-2011

This is one of a long line of Ford's I have owned, and my second Focus. The first being a C-Max version (same engine). Generally I cannot fault the car in anyway as it's a very well spec'd version with keyless start, sat nav and the ST style body kit. I have completed over 60,000 miles in it and experienced faultless performance from it on my daily commute, long drives and towing a motorcycle trailer. Running costs have been impressive with an average of 55mpg being reported by the fuel computer despite the manner in which driven. It's comfortable, practical and drives lovely (as Focus's generally do). My only niggles have been poor dealer support and electrical gremlins which have primarily plagued the stereo/sat nav setup and never got resolved despite a Ford Master Tech looking at it. Build quality is not as good as the likes of VW and Audi, but for the money I cannot say it was a waste and I have certainly enjoyed owning it thus far.

Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI - great wee car but needs plenty of TLC

FORD FOCUS DIESEL HATCHBACK 2008-2011

The Focus is a fantastic car, great for all people from all backgrounds, whether your a weekend driver to a die hard enthusiast. The 1.6 TDCI does come with some very specific needs and you should seriously consider them before getting this car with this engine. If your only going to do short drives then forget this engine, go for a petrol. This car is fitted with a DPF which means fantastically cheap "road tax" but it comes with a major down side, this will fill up and this will cost you a fortune to fix. If you are not doing regular 30 min drives don't bother getting any car with a DPF, the DPF requires your car to reach a certain temperature and sustain it to passively clean the DPF out, short town trips will not do this. The car can actively clean out the DPF but again it wont do it if you only do short trips. The consequences of buying a 1.6 TDCI and only using it for short trips will be extremely costly, firstly the DPF will fill up however you drive the car but short trips will fill it up sooner, that can cost anything from 400 to 1800 to replace. If the DPF is filling up it can also apply back pressure on the turbo, this can adversely effect the turbo bearings resulting in premature turbo failure, sort of replacement, 500 to 1000. The DPF should be replaced around the 75000 miles point. Assuming you take long drives this car is ideal, very enonomical on fuel, very efficient and a comfortable drive but as the title says, this car needs plenty of PLC, that means doing oil changes every 6000 miles, this above all else is the most important thing to remember and I cant stress enough how important it really is. Failing to change the oil will result in cabon building up, after about 12000 miles the oil will become lumpy, this isn't good, this will block up certain tubes and filters and it will result in the turbo failing. if you change it every 6000 miles the carbon doesn't build up which will prolong the life of your car! There are many other things you can look in to for prolonging the life of your car and id suggest looking at fordownersclub to gather good advice from felling drivers. Other than the engine this car has plenty of future potential, loads of cool mods and upgrades can be done if that's your thing. The biggest shame for this car is the negative perception of it which is easy to understand from reading my above comments, people buy this car thinking the cheap road tax is perfect along with low fuel costs which drew the attention of thousands of people, unfortunately many of those people didn't know what you know now, they brought the car, did the short trips and didn't do regular oil changes and paid the price with blown turbos, some people had multiple turbos fail because of the mess their car was in. Many of these cars ended up on the scrap heap with "horror stories" plastered all over the internet. But as I said before, if you treat this car well, she will treat you well and my car approaching 100k is driving fine without any problems, I have no intention of changing it so long may that continue.

Loved my 05 focus

FORD FOCUS DIESEL HATCHBACK 2008-2011

Be prepared to pay for new steering bushes, wears out pretty quickly, especially wishbones @ front. On start up steering grinds a bit until you‘ve moved a bit.first gear on moving off, a bit jerky?? Fuel economy not very good 48-50 mpg, think it,s supposed to be 60 odds

Good car poor engine

FORD FOCUS DIESEL HATCHBACK 2008-2011

This is a high mileage car, the car on the whole is a good car, fuel economy is great, comfort is good, my only complaint is they have not used the best engine in the ford range, this engine I believe was used in Citroen's and one other make of car, in my opinion the engine is it's worst feature, why? well I had many EGR valve problems, also as it has just reached 100k mile, I've just had the Cam belt, water pump, replaced and it was found the drive belt tensioner pulley needed replacing. I've had the car 22 months and spent over £1,000 on engine repairs and routine changes. If buying the same model again, I'd make sure it's not high mileage. I'd check what has been done by way of repairs. If you have one which developes EGR valve problems, make sure you only use genuine parts, I had two faulty Lucas valves fitted, before finally going for genuine!

Buying Ford Focus second hand

FORD FOCUS DIESEL HATCHBACK 2008-2011

There are an abundance of second hand focus for sale where good deals can be made.My 2010 1.6diesel hatch I find to be one of the best I have had it 3.5 years and apart from new front tyres and battery it has cost me nothing.road holding is superb, the ride is so smooth and quiet,at speed you would never know it was diesel.Mine is metallic sea grey with 5spoke alloy wheels, cruise control, voice control, rear traction control, abs, automatic zone air con.and sony radio cassette player with blue tooth all this being standard equipment in my model. The only thing I've added is parking sensors, front and rear with camera.Forget your Golfs and Audi's which are a lot more expensive, have a test drive in a focus especially diesel with all the goodies .You won't believe how good they are (by the way mine is left hand drive 'cos I live in Spain)

Good old Focus

FORD FOCUS DIESEL HATCHBACK 2008-2011

I have Had sevral Ford cars over the years, And I Can say with my hand on my heart this Focus Is by far the best one so far. The build quality is much much better than Fords of the past. You do get a small amount of road noise on Motoways but when you cnsider the speeds traveling that is to be expected. I would whole hartedley recomend the ford focus to anyone. I would sugets though to get as higher model as can be aforded, As this will bring more confort and equiptment....

First impressions of my first Ford

FORD FOCUS DIESEL HATCHBACK 2008-2011

What a car!!!!! I only picked it up on Saturday just gone. I've only been a solo driver since I passed my test on 14th October, and this is my 2nd car. It replaces a 16 year old Renault Clio (electrics terrible) which would hardly ever start and the electrics were shot Would I recommend this car? Damn straight I would. It's as quick as you need, roomy as two Renault Clio's, loads of space in the front (I'm 6'3"). Not as much space in the back when my seat is fully back, but big enough for my wife to fit. Cavernous boot, engine great, very pleased with it Can anyone advise on the issues with DPF? How can I avoid problems?
