As this model is no longer available, I don't see a point in reviewing it.

Great first car

TOYOTA IQ HATCHBACK 2009-2014

So far I have done over 20,000 miles in the thing (now approaching 80,000) and haven't broken down once . The car is brilliant to drive my only wish is that it had more power on the motor way, but as a city car it is brilliant. Only wish I could upgrade to a new 1.33 model but unfortunately they have discontinued the IQ. Liam

IQ 3

TOYOTA IQ HATCHBACK 2009-2014

Great amount of interior space for footprint of car. Fantastic turning circle. 1.3 engine and 6sp gives surprisingly comfortable 70mph cruising. Acceleration leisurely! More confident about build quality than Smart or Fiat 500. Much more character than most mainstream Toyota cars. Shame no electric version brought to market, and now discontinued with no successor in the pipeline.

Miles per gallon is about instead of the claimed 65mp. If you are buying for economy get something bigger and better mpg.

Big little car

TOYOTA IQ HATCHBACK 2009-2014

This is an extraordinary engineering achievement: a tiny car that has Tardis-like tendencies - it seems bigger on the inside. I can get 3 adults plus the dog into it and drive them 50 or 60 miles without anyone suffering backache or pins and needles (although I haven't asked the dog). Oh, and I'll still have a little fuel left if there was a gallon to start with. And it has Toyota's typical reliability; in 7 years, it's had one fault - the courtesy light micro-switch failed.

IQ 1.0

TOYOTA IQ HATCHBACK 2009-2014

If you are looking for a small and cheap to run city car look no further. Great for 2 with the ability to get 2 adults in the back occasionally especially if the driver is shorter and does not have the seat all the way back. With just 2 up and the back seats down you can get small suitcase(s) in the boot and lots of clever storage. Amazing turning circle means you can u turn on most roads, very easy to park and drive around town. When driving there is nothing to tell you that it's not a much bigger car, it's only when you look over your shoulder you remember how small it is. I've had mine for 4 years and apart from yearly servicing have not had to do any repairs. Main dealer service is relatively cheap as well and any parts needed not too expensive. Fuel economy is good especially around town. If there was any criticism then overtaking must be well timed as it has little chance of speeding up when going up hill on a fast road and the radio controls drive me mad with 1 joystick for all functions. I have noticed that the bonnet is prone to stone chips but otherwise it still looks amazing at 7 years old.

Tiny Car/Big Mistake

TOYOTA IQ HATCHBACK 2009-2014

Don't! Although properly maintained, it drives like a demented cement-mixer. The petrol cosumption is utterly a p p a l l i n g and the ride 'quality' a bone-shaking ordeal in urban environs. Avoid it.

Small, agile quick

TOYOTA IQ HATCHBACK 2009-2014

The 1.33l petrol engine gives this small car a heck of great performance. It's a small car that feels big to drive. You don't feel intimidated driving along the motorway and whizzes round the city.

Practical and economical city car that holds its own on the motorway.

TOYOTA IQ HATCHBACK 2009-2014

Great little town car that is also very well behaved on the motorway and inspires confidence. Very economical, no road tax and great fun to drive. Roadholding is excellent, the car is very responsive. The interior has a quality feel and is very comfortable. Keyless operation is a joy. However, the 999cc model can struggle uphill. Other minor points include annoying radio/cd player joy stick control; awkward heater controls; no spare wheel; useless automatic rear view mirror - this never worked, Toyota has replaced it and it still doesn't work (bring back the manually flipped rear view mirrors); the ultra-long oil dip-stick can be difficult to put back into position. But these are all minor points and do not detract one iota from the enjoyment of driving and owning this car. It is a pity Toyota no longer makes it.

My Perfect Runaround

TOYOTA IQ HATCHBACK 2009-2014

I needed a car as I was caring for my Dad and my bicycle would take too long to get back and fourth. I first saw the IQ in my local dealership and it truly was love at first sight. To this day I still cannot find any faults with it, it's so good that Aston Martin based their Cygnet model on it! Quite, comfortable, loads of room, easy to keep clean and the rear seats fold flat for extra storage if you need it what more do you need. My advice buy one now you'll just love it.

Disk brakes

TOYOTA IQ HATCHBACK 2009-2014

Bought this car second hand in Sep 2013 with 4500 miles. In beginning of March 2014 complained to the Toyota dealership that the disks on the passenger side were completely rusted - that is 5 months down the line. Toyota dealership "In good faith" - the car still under its 5 year guarantee supposedly changed all 4 disks. Their excuse was it was "My style of driving and that I lived on the coast"- what a fob off. So now Sep 2016 (car out of guarantee) the same 2 passenger side disks are so rusted that 3 garages were horrified and their opinion is that they were never changed in the first place. They, all 3, stated that its nothing to do with living on the coast. Cost of this repair is £350.00 which I aim to complain to Toyota about as looking at the Forum it appears to be a problem with the IQ - nothing to do with my driving or living by the coast. I had a Nissan Micra -90,000 miles 12 years old and NEVER had this problem- even with "My type of Driving" Toyota needs to take responsibility on this as its unacceptable

Toyota IQ a small city car but beware serious paint problems on some cars

TOYOTA IQ HATCHBACK 2009-2014

If you only carry two people this car and usually make short journeys this car could suit you. The cabin space is generous for front passengers but the rear seat area is more of a joke and really only good for shopping, luggage or a dog. It revs freely but lack of power becomes evident on hills. It is known that 2009 vehicles with Pearlescent White paint finish suffer from the top coats of paint delaminating from the underlying primer coating, look for telltale signs on roof and tops of side panels. Only solution is a full respray costing over £4000. At present it is not clear if this issue only affects this particular paint finish and 2009 registered cars or is a wider problem affecting other Toyota models, colours and ranges of vehicles.

A great little car

TOYOTA IQ HATCHBACK 2009-2014

Surprisingly roomy interior for two people, and great as a shopping car. A third adult behind the front passenger is ok too, but unless the driver was very tiny indeed, no legroom at all for a fourth passenger, However it is a very small car and well thought out, so brilliant for parking, and an amazingly small turning circle. The engine runs very sweetly and is surprisingly quiet at high revs, and very ,nippy, around town. On the motorway it can keep up with the traffic with no trouble , but you have to be prepared to change down a gear or two for overtaking and hills. ( as with all small engined cars) The interior is arguably a bit 'plasticy' if you compare it with say German cars , but who cares anyway, it all works fine, and Toyota have a very good reputation for reliability. From all that I have read and seen, a much superior vehicle to the 'Smart' car. The interior light is very annoying - one very tiny one at the front like a glow worm, but that is my only real criticism in the short time that I have owned it.

2009 IQ 2 Manual 1.0

TOYOTA IQ HATCHBACK 2009-2014

IQ 2 I believe is the best spec. Offering Keyless Open / Start. Rain Sensing Wipers, Climate, Front Fogs, Power Folding Door Mirrors and Alarm. 1.0 Litre Engine does the job. No road tax. Overall Economy hovers around 50mpg. Car is used for super short journeys. Try to use it more at weekend to keep the car up to speed. Spacious considering its tiny dimensions. Does drive like a big car. Turning circle is unbelievable. Only 2 complaints - 2,000 rpm noise. Standard Toyota issue. Also some lack of flexibility due to high gearing. Don't let this put you off as you can work through these things. I believe this is Toyota's best kept small car secret.
